Freeze dried camping meals, priced honestly

A pouch price tells you almost nothing. Dry pack weights across the meals we priced run from 80g to 175g, so the only comparison that means anything is price per gram of dry food. Do that arithmetic and three habits in this category stop making sense. The bigger pack is dearer per gram. Pouches at an identical shelf price hold different amounts of food. And one brand publishes no weight at all, so it cannot be compared with anything.

Trap one: the XL pack costs more per gram

Campers Pantry sells the same recipes in a single and an XL. The XL pouches hold 125g and sell for $23.99; the 100g singles sell for $18.99. That is 26 per cent more money for 25 per cent more food, so per 100g the XL works out at $19.19 against $18.99, roughly 1 per cent dearer rather than cheaper. It is a small gap. The point is the direction: the assumption that the larger size carries a discount is simply wrong here, and it is wrong on every XL in the range we could price.

Trap two: the same shelf price, less food

This one is larger and harder to spot, because there is nothing to compare on the shelf tag. Three pairs in our data are the same brand at an identical price with different amounts of food inside.

The clearest of them is an 80g pouch at the 100g price. Campers Pantry Chicken Cacciatore - Single Serve 80g carries a published net dry weight of 80g rather than the 100g the rest of the range uses, at the identical $18.99. That makes it 25 per cent dearer per gram than its own shelfmates with nothing on the front of the pack to tell you. It is the cleanest illustration on this site of why a meal is not a unit of weight.

Trap three: a brand you cannot price at all

Radix Nutrition names its meals by calories rather than by grams. The listing we checked is sold as a 400kcal meal at $9.52, and the only weight printed anywhere on the page is a shipping weight that includes the packaging. A calorie count cannot be converted into a dry weight, and a shipping weight is not a net weight, so this product has no per-gram figure in our table and cannot be compared with anything else on this page. We have recorded that as not published rather than estimating it, because an estimate here would be a number we invented.

It is worth being clear that this is not an accusation of bad faith. Naming a meal by energy content is defensible for a hiker counting kilojoules. It just means that particular brand has opted out of the only comparison that lets a buyer check whether they are being charged fairly, and a buyer is entitled to notice that.

Every meal we could price

Cheapest food first. The median across these 10 complete meals is $18.99 per 100g of dry food, and the spread from $14.28 to $23.74 is a 66 per cent spread.

Read the first and last rows together. Back Country Cuisine charges $24.99 a pouch, the most of anything here, and delivers food at $14.28 per 100g, the least of anything here. Campers Pantry charges $18.99, the least, at $18.99 per 100g. Whichever of those is better for you depends on whether you are carrying the pack or paying for it, but the two rankings are exact opposites and only one of them is printed on a shelf tag.

Two listings are kept out of that table on purpose. They are freeze dried meat components rather than complete meals, sold as Campers Pantry Chipotle Pulled Beef 80g and Campers Pantry BBQ Pulled Beef Brisket 100g, and at $31.24 and $24.99 per 100g they sit well above the meal pouches because the pack is all meat where a meal pouch is largely pasta or rice. Putting them in the same column would have made the meals look better value than they are.

Weight, which is the whole reason you are buying these

You carry the dry weight and you eat the wet weight, and the ratio is the product's actual selling point. Where a prepared weight is published, the pouches in our data rehydrate to 2.5 to 4 times what they weigh in your pack: 175g becomes about 613g, 100g becomes about 400g, 125g becomes about 500g, 80g becomes about 280g, 100g becomes about 250g.

That is 5 of 13 listings. The rest publish no prepared weight at all, which matters more than it sounds: a pouch that looks cheap per gram of dry food may simply be denser and drier, and without a prepared figure there is no way to tell how much dinner you are actually getting. Weigh what you buy once and you will know your own brand for good.

How long a pouch really keeps

Long-storage numbers are the loudest claim in this category and the weakest sourced. The best known of them is 30 years, and the register records exactly what it covers, which is taste and nothing else. It is a manufacturer's taste guarantee, not an independent test, and not a statement about safety or nutrition.

There is also a packaging difference that gets lost. The same 30 year claim is made for a No. 10 can and for a foil pouch, and the register notes the pouch risk plainly: Seal integrity is the practical risk in a pouch relative to a can. A camping pouch is built to be light and opened once, not to sit in a shed for a decade. One Australian listing in our data publishes a two year shelf life on the pouch, which is a far more realistic number for the format. The full sourcing, including where the widely repeated 25 year figure comes from, is set out in the shelf life register.

Buying against making your own

On ingredients the home machine wins and it is not close. Retail freeze dried meat runs a median of $16.41 per 100g and bulk freeze dried fruit $10.90, against $18.99 for a finished meal pouch. That is 16 per cent above the meat and 74 per cent above the fruit, for assembly, portioning, a barrier pouch and a brand.

What that comparison leaves out is the work. A bought pouch is a balanced single-serve meal that needs hot water and nothing else, weighed and sealed by someone else. A home batch is components you portion, season, bag and label yourself, on a machine that costs four figures before it dries anything. If you already own one, making your own trail food is close to free at the margin. If you are buying a machine to save money on camping meals alone, run the numbers first on the cost per kilo page and check what one batch actually holds on the batch capacity register.

Common questions

How much does a freeze dried camping meal cost in Australia?

Between $18.99 and $24.99 a pouch across the 10 complete meals we priced, with a median of $18.99 per 100g of dry food. The per-pouch figure is close to useless on its own, because dry pack weights in that set run from 80g to 175g. The cheapest pouch is not the cheapest food: Back Country Cuisine charges the most per pack and the least per gram.

Is the XL pack better value?

Not in this range, which is the opposite of what almost everyone assumes. Campers Pantry XL pouches work out at $19.19 per 100g against $18.99 for the 100g single of the same recipe. The XL costs about 26 per cent more for 25 per cent more food, so it is slightly dearer per gram, not cheaper. Check the gram weight on the variant, not the size name.

How long do freeze dried camping meals keep?

The long numbers you see on packaging are manufacturer claims rather than independent test results, and the best known of them is explicitly a taste guarantee, not a safety or nutrition statement. A foil pouch is also a weaker barrier than a sealed can over long periods, with seal integrity the practical risk. Treat a pouch as camping food you will eat this season or next, and read the shelf life register before planning a decade around one.

Is it cheaper to freeze dry your own camping meals?

On ingredients, almost certainly. Retail freeze dried meat runs a median of $16.41 per 100g and bulk freeze dried fruit $10.90, against $18.99 for a finished meal pouch. The catch is that a bought pouch is a complete, balanced, single-serve meal in a barrier pouch, weighed and sealed for you, and a home batch is components you still have to portion, season and pack. The machine, the power and the bags belong in the sum too, which is what the cost per kilo page is for.
